Healthy pregnancy is a pre-requisite for sustainable human development and to have a safe and healthy pregnancy, delivery and post-delivery period, it is important to promote the concept of Safe Motherhood. Keeping the state of affairs related to maternal mortality, World Population Foundation (WPF), Pakistan launched its campaign on Safe Motherhood, “Saving the Soul Bearers” on the eve of International Mother’s Day, 11 May 2008. The purpose of the campaign was to advocate for Safe Motherhood through awareness raising at different levels to build up momentum so that related issues can be prioritized at political, policy and programmatic levels creating an enabling environment where every pregnancy is planned and safe.
In 2009, World Population Foundation, Pakistan, took the Safe Motherhood campaign a step further to create mass awareness among stakeholders and introduced the concept of joint responsibility. A week prior to Mother’s Night 2009, WPF organized a string of provincial level consultations with stakeholders to draw recommendations from across the country. This process culminated into the formulation of a “Call to Action”. Ms. Farzana Raja on behalf of the Government of Pakistan received the “Call to Action”. This year too on upcoming International Mother’s Day, WPF intends to raise awareness on “United Nations-Human Rights Council’s Resolution on Preventable Maternal Mortality Resolution” in which Maternal Mortality has been declared as a Human Rights issue. WPF, Pakistan with the help of partner NGOs along with print and electronic media intends to spread awareness on the life threatening issue of maternal mortality with special focus to the Maternal Mortality Resolution. This year WPF, Pakistan is increasing the scope and will now be reaching all four provinces of the country including six most vulnerable districts with regard to Gender Based Violence which include D.G Khan, Muzzaffargarh, Kashmore, Jacobabad, Jaffrabad and Nasirabad.
